| TO THE SMART HOME GUIDE

Gayther Smart Home - Foreword
The smart home guide for the elder LGBTQIA+ community was created to help older individuals navigate the challenges they face when seeking assistance. It is estimated that over 50% of older LGBTQIA+ people live alone and are twice as likely to do so compared to their heterosexual peers. Many of those now in retirement belong to Generation X and the Baby Boomer generations; many came to terms with their sexuality and gender identity during difficult periods in less tolerant and accepting societies. Although many have accepted who they are, as they age and need support, fear of rejection and isolation can prevent them from accessing the help they require.

It is estimated that over 70% of LGBTQIA+ older individuals fear discrimination in assisted living facilities. This group also worries about the need to hide their identity to fit in and the lack of inclusive care and understanding of community needs. These factors often lead most LGBTQIA+ people to remain at home longer than their heterosexual counterparts, frequently without the care, support, and services they genuinely require.

Although care service providers and facilities need to continue working towards becoming more inclusive of minority groups, this guide demonstrates how smart homes and their numerous devices can support individuals in their daily lives, helping them maintain a reasonable quality of life and access to care, all while at home.
Always remember that you are not alone, and there are people out there who care about you and want to help you get the support and assistance you need.

Important Prerequisites
Throughout this guide, we will explore the benefits of smart homes and how many of the devices can assist you in your daily life. To utilise smart home technology, certain prerequisites must be met before investing in the many available devices and services.
Gayther Smart Home - Pre-Internet
WIFI
Almost all smart home devices need an internet connection to work properly. You need the internet to control your smart devices or use the app on your smartphone, whether at home or away. Internet costs and speeds have fallen considerably, and to ensure you have enough capacity, aim for 25–50 Mbps (megabits per second) for smooth operation, from browsing to HD video streaming. Internet packages and services will vary depending on the country you are in, the availability of services like fibre-optic, and how close you are to your nearest exchange. Once you find a suitable service and internet speed, online guides can assist. These guides are general; however, if you look up your service provider and setup guide, you will likely find an online tutorial.

Other Considerations
Gayther Smart Home - Pre-Consider
In this section, we will discuss considerations and best practices for online services, smartphones, and smart home devices. Many are recommended approaches to protect yourself and your information online. These are merely considerations; you should adopt an approach and strategy that works for you.
SAFE OR LOCK BOX

To implement some of the other considerations, a safe or lockbox can be a good idea. A safe where you can keep sensitive information and provide easy access to it when needed.

In a smart home setup, you will likely have several passwords for different services and devices. Keeping a record, like a book of all the passwords you have used, can be invaluable when you need to access or re-enter a specific password. Store the book in a safe or lockbox to keep it secure.

It is always advised to change default passwords to unique ones for all devices and services.

It is also recommended to use a unique password for each service and device, with a minimum of 8 characters, including uppercase and lowercase letters and symbols. Tools like 1Password can automatically generate passwords for you. Click here for the password generator

Think about who you want to have access to your smart home and devices. If friends and family are involved, consider who should have access to what, and make sure you understand and set appropriate limitations and restrictions.

Especially with regard to internal cameras and listening devices, you must ensure the on light is always activated when the camera is in use and that you control when and who can access your devices, to maintain your privacy.

It is always wise to inform your neighbours and explain your situation. Make sure they know when you might need help and what to watch out for, such as alarms or signals that could indicate you are in trouble.

With many smart home devices and services, you will need to purchase the physical device, and you might also be charged a service fee or an annual subscription fee. So, be aware of potential subscription costs.

The typical smart home assistance device has a listening range of 10 to 30 metres, which depends on obstructions. Walls and other devices can interfere with the range, so for a smart home to work effectively, it is essential to ensure sufficient coverage when planning its setup. For example, an average two-bedroom property might be 80m², meaning that the modern smart device effectively covers about 150 to 250m² of unobstructed space. Although one device might be enough, it can be more strategic to place two devices in key positions.

Find inclusive businesses and services.
We all need a little help and support at different times in our lives. When that happens, it’s important to find businesses, providers, and services that meet our needs, have experience with people like us, or are dedicated to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. Support can range from ready-made meals to long-term residential care; discover high-quality, exceptional services from care providers around the world. Explore the CPS today.

ABOUT SMART HOMES

Services and devices designed to
help you in your daily life
Learn more about smart homes, what they are, how the technology has developed, and how it can assist people with their daily tasks and support those with declining cognitive abilities.
Gayther Smart Home - Main About

The term ‘smart home’ describes services and devices that automate and digitally manage various home systems. Not to be confused with AI, smart homes are simply devices connected to computer networks that can be controlled remotely or automatically to improve convenience, security, energy efficiency, and comfort. This technology allows for advanced automation and device-to-device communication. Systems and devices such as smart lighting, thermostats, security cameras, door locks, appliances, and voice-controlled assistants are all connected through a central network or platform, enabling smooth management and customisation of home functions.

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR THE ELDER COMMUNITY?
Imagine being able to turn on the lights in every room at home right now, all from your phone or with a voice command. Creating automations that say “it is dark,” which then close all the curtains and turn on the lights. Someone arrives at your front door, and you speak to them through your door camera and open the door to let them in, all from your comfortable chair. Controlling your home’s temperature, turning on the heating in your bedroom, or needing medical assistance and connecting with someone who can help; these are just some examples of the power of smart homes.
SCHEDULES AND ROUTINES
Smart home technology not only allows you to control devices but also to create schedules and routines. While schedules enable you to set when devices activate, routines let you group devices so that a single command can initiate a sequence. For example, saying the command “it is getting dark” can trigger the curtains to close, the lights to turn on, and the kettle to start boiling, all from a single instruction.
OTHER USEFUL FUNCTIONS
Smart home assistants and smartphones also offer a variety of services and features to support you in daily life. From assisting with routine tasks to providing important reminders, let us explore some common features:
  • Shopping lists – add items by instructing the home assistant or by typing on your laptop or phone, and all the items are added to a list that you can check and track at any time.
  • Calendar invites – allowing you to add and manage calendar entries to keep track of your appointments. Smart devices can remind you of upcoming hospital appointments so you never miss one again.
  • Unlimited reminders – not only calendar alerts but also smart devices can provide numerous prompts throughout the day, with alarms and notifications, like “take your tablets” or “Don’t forget to call the doctor”.
  • Maintaining schedules and routines – swiftly managing the schedules and routines of items within your home, including start and end times, and controlling all your smart home devices, whether at home or away.
  • Staying connected – the smart assistant can read messages, check the weather, look up measurements and even recipes for you.

These devices continuously track heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and sleep patterns, providing valuable data for managing health conditions. Easy-to-activate SOS features enable older adults to call for help quickly during emergencies. Lastly, alerts can remind users to take medications on time, supporting proper health management.

These devices are easily accessible for daily use, encouraging users to monitor their heart health regularly. The monitoring provides valuable data that can help identify trends, track fitness progress, or detect irregularities early. Some devices can alert users or caregivers when abnormal heart rates are detected, allowing timely medical intervention. The data can be synced with health management apps for comprehensive tracking, goal-setting, and sharing with healthcare professionals.

COMMUNICATING AND ORGANISING
As we get older, especially if we live alone, remembering appointments, when and whether we have taken medication, and conducting non-intrusive welfare checks can all be challenging. CHECK-INS AND DROP-INS
Gayther Smart Home - Check Ins
Many smart home assistant speakers and devices provide communication features like check-ins and drop-ins. Check-ins let friends and family connect with the home assistant to confirm that someone is well. The device will alert the user of an incoming call, allowing them to accept and talk. Drop-ins are different: usually, you set up special contacts who can connect directly to the home assistant without the user needing to accept, which is useful for welfare checks or emergencies.
ADDITIONAL INFO | Smart home assistants can be set to do-not-disturb mode while you are sleeping or want to keep your privacy. In do-not-disturb mode, certain notifications are suppressed.
Gayther Smart Home - Emergency
Within a smart home setup, alongside your usual favourites and contacts, it’s wise to create an emergency contact. The emergency contact should have a simple reference, such as “for help” or “it’s an emergency”. If you fall or need assistance, you could say “Alexa, call for help” or “Google, call it’s an emergency,” connecting you directly to your emergency contact.
ADDITIONAL INFO | Using home automation, you can establish emergency groups that contact multiple individuals simultaneously, as well as send text messages or even flash lights.
Gayther Smart Home - Reminder
A useful feature of a smart home assistant is scheduling and reminders. Home assistants can be used to organise appointments and important dates. Besides scheduling, these assistants are invaluable for reminders, including medication alerts, where the device can set hundreds each day if needed. They notify users about upcoming appointments in advance and remind them of daily tasks and chores, such as watering plants, taking out rubbish, or cleaning. They also provide financial alerts for bill due dates or transactions, along with reminders to replace filters and batteries, carry out routine device checks, and more.
ADDITIONAL INFO | Besides setting useful reminders, you can also create recurring reminders, such as when tablets are due, with another reminder 10 minutes later to check if you have taken your tablet, and so on.
Gayther Smart Home - Shopping
Smart home devices can be used to manage a shopping list, enabling items to be added and removed as they are replaced. Items can be added by giving instructions to the smart home assistant or via a smartphone app. The shopping list feature helps users keep track of what they need and record items to purchase.
ADDITIONAL INFO | Some online shopping platforms let you link your smart home devices to your account, so you can automatically order items you need and have them delivered to your home.
Gayther Smart Home - Home Assistance (2)
Smart home assistants can do much more than provide hands-free controls. Along with managing smart home devices, users can listen to music, ask for information and receive answers, set reminders and alarms, and most importantly, make and receive calls, including Wi-Fi calls. Using routines and automation, you can group tasks, activities, and controls under a single voice command. For example, you could create a routine that, when the phrase “lights on downstairs” is spoken, turns on all the lights on the ground floor.
ADDITIONAL INFO | Many smart home assistants can connect with other assistants in different households worldwide. Additionally, you can utilise third-party services like Skype to connect with users who do not have a home assistant.
Gayther Smart Home - Check Lists
Many smart home and virtual assistants enable you to create multiple, repeatable checklists. A checklist can help streamline daily routines and ensure essential tasks are not overlooked. They can send reminders for daily chores, such as when to do laundry, clean, take out the rubbish, or complete household tasks. They assist in tracking items to buy, adding or removing items on the go, and sending alerts when shopping is necessary. They also support packing lists for trips by listing essentials like clothes, toiletries, and travel documents. Additionally, they help plan activities for birthdays, holidays, and other celebrations, including decorating, gift shopping, meal preparation, and more.
ADDITIONAL INFO | You can create repeatable checklists and assign tasks to others as reminders of who should be doing what.

Planning your
own smart home
The smart home guide was created to inform you about the benefits and uses of smart home technology, and to give you the confidence to plan and set up your own smart home.
Gayther Smart Home - Conclusion
For some people, new technology can seem intimidating, especially with all the conflicting stories in the media; however, with a little research and some controls and measures in place, it can offer not only support but also the freedom and flexibility to remain at home longer. Smart home technology is constantly advancing, and although there is a wide variety of devices and services available, it is essential to focus on those that address a real need in your life rather than mere luxuries. If you have mobility issues, being able to speak to visitors from your chair and to lock or unlock the door via your phone can help you get up less often.

Safety and security are also top priorities for many older people, helping them stay safe and maintain their privacy and dignity in their own homes. Did you know that the bathroom, kitchen, and stairs are considered the most hazardous areas in the home? Imagine falling in the bathroom, experiencing a sharp pain in the chest, and being nowhere near a phone. What would you do? With a smart home, you could call for help from your bed or the bathroom, and assistance would be on its way.

For anyone considering a smart home, begin by mapping your house, identifying the areas and tasks you need assistance with, and start, even by consulting the guide, with the devices, services, and solutions. By linking potential solutions, you can start to determine what might help, how much it may cost, and research the products and services that suit you best. It might seem complex; however, hopefully, this guide can help you not only learn more about smart home solutions but also gain the confidence to begin planning your own smart home.
