Samoa is part of the Polynesia region in the continent of Oceania. Samoa was formed after a civil war when the Samoan archipelago was divided between Germany and the USA; Samoa gained independence in 1920 from New Zealand, which ruled the islands after Germany. It is in the Southern hemisphere and is 2.9 thousand square kilometres in size. The primary languages spoken are Samoan and English; the capital city is Apia and the main currency used is the Samoan Tala.
